With winter just a few short weeks away, no doubt you’re all mulling over just when you’re going to turn your heating on and just how long you can leave it till you do. In actual fact, the day when most people in the UK turn their heating on is October 16th, so if you’ve made it until now then you’re doing well and you’re ahead of the game.
However, it’s important that you don’t sit in the cold at home as you could make yourself ill if you do – yet new research from Gocompare.com Energy has found that 77 per cent of homeowners in the UK will have to ration the amount of energy used this winter. Tactics to help people save money include leaving rooms unheated, leaving it as long as you can before switching the central heating on and reducing the use of appliances that use a lot energy.
In addition, people will also be having showers instead of baths this winter and heating their properties for less time than they’d like in a bid to keep usage under control.
“For many people, energy bills represent a significant proportion of their household expenditure. So it makes sense to find ways to cut the cost of winter bills when household energy use tends to be at its highest. But instead of going without – now is a good time to shop around to see if you can reduce the cost of your gas and electricity by switching to a better tariff,” the company’s Ben Wilson said.
Further Gocompare.com research also found this month (October 19th) that 885,000 homeowners currently owe their energy suppliers money – which may be preventing them from switching suppliers in a bid to save cash. Some 17 per cent of those with debts say they’d like to switch but believe that their arrears mean they can’t.
If you do owe money to your energy supplier, don’t bury your head in the sand and hope the problem goes away. Get on the phone straight away to discuss your situation – you may well be able to set up a repayment plan with your provider to help you clear your debt. And remember that you’re still able to switch energy tariff or supplier even if you do have outstanding debts, so you can still take advantage of the best deals available to you.
